Textured Toddler Hood

Seems like the demand is up for hoods this year. Can't say I blame folks as they are awful cute. I whipped up this little pattern for my bud Willow (who, BTW, has been practicing for her future as a stuntman and hurt herself the other day.) One thing I will say is that the photos of hoods flat and not on people never does them justice. They just end up looking like some very oddly unbalanced piece of apparel. I am sure once I get a shot of Willow in her hood it will look better in photos. Trust me though, this is adorable and a keeper!

The pattern is featured in a size that will easily fit a 12-24 month old child. But it is easily adjusted. The pattern, with a stitch of (sc, 2 dc), is easily made bigger or smaller by adjusting your starting chain by multiples of 3.

  • Skill level: easy!
  • Yarn: Big Twist Chunky (5). Bubble Gum
  • Hook: K
  • Pattern is in American terms
  • Stitches used: sing crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch), slip stitch (sl. st.) and whip stitch.

Hood
Chain 25
1. 2 dc in 4th chain from hook, skip 2, (sc, 2 dc) in next chain, skip 2. Repeat pattern o end. Sc in last chain. Chain 2. Turn.
2. 2 dc in first stitch, skip 2, (sc, 2 dc) in next stitch. Repeat to end. Sc in last stitch. Chain 2 turn.
3. Repeat row 2 to 35 rows total. Fasten off yarn.
4. Fold in half and sew up the seam with a whip stitch.

Scarf
Chain 73
And same steps from hood until you have worked 9 rows.
Fasten off yarn.

Attaching scarf to hood.
Count 3 "puffs" in on scarf and, lining up the 3rd puff on the scarf with the 1st puff on the edge of the hood, either slip stitch scarf to hood or whip stitch. Choice is yours.

Edging.
Either fasten off yarn or begin edging of hood with sc all the way round with 2 sc in corners. Do 2 rows. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Attach your buttons.

Common hat/head size chart
Hi all. Been looking at your posts below and the common question is how to know how many chains of 3 to add to accommodate the size you need. mention this below already but I always go to Bev's Country Cottage's web site. She has a chart of sizes for all sorts of things including head/hat dimensions  worked out based on the average size head for a person of that age. Here is the link.

Hi Diane,

Oh thank you for your visit and comment. I could totally see this pattern stitch in a sweater. Actually it would be so nice and cozy. I think I need to work something up. :-) Great idea!

Hi Donna and everyone who has been posting on here. Sorry I have been a bit MIA. I have been learning a new job and its pretty absorbing.

I have a go to link that I use to figure out dimensions for all pieces I work on since I don't always have a person of the age I need to create the piece.

It's Bev's Country Cottage Hat/Head size dimension chart. Here is the link to her page

http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/size-chart.html#hat

Hope this helps.

Hi Teresa

I love to hear that you are using this pattern for the church's children's home. That's why I make free patterns because I want them to be used to help and give to others. :-) Sherry

My "puffs" aren't lining up and my rows are somehow losing stitches. I must be doing something wrong, but I keep checking the pattern and can't figure it out. I started with 8 puffs, but after a few rows, I only had 5 puffs. Any ideas?

Oh me too! I've recently converted from knitting to crochet and I'm losing my mind trying to read patterns LOL. I'm wondering if you don't skip 2 between every puff? Is it (1sc,2dc) repeated or (1sc,2dc,sk2) repeated... with the skips part of the repeat? I don't know if I'm making sense. I'm also getting 5 puffs now.

You are going to sc 2 dc in the same stitch then skip two stitches and repeat. Make sure your doing one sc in the last stitch of the row which is inbetween your chain 2 and your first dc in the beginning of your previous row. I also noticed that the (sc, 2dc) ends up being in the sc of each cluster in the previous row. Hope this helps you.

Thank you for this pattern!! I've been trying to find ways to keep my youngest's neck covered while out and about without taking a coat off and on for the car seat. She just pulls the blankets right off and hats don't cover the neck. This will work for the car seat and for walking when she's in the carrier. Awesome idea!

I am new to this so am wondering if Big Twist Chunky is the brand name and the five beside it does that mean 5 skeins? Sorry if this is something that is obvious to most

Rebecca

The 5 refers to type of yarn - bulky. So any 5 bulky yarn would work. Big twist chunky is a Joann yarn. I used 1 skein and a little part of another, so buy 2. 5 skeins is way too much for this . Hope this helps. It was a very simple and easy pattern. Looks nice too

Couldn't find any size 5 yarn so I'm using 6. I'm assuming this will make everything that much larger... should I be doing less rows to accommodate? Any suggestions to estimate size? The link to head sizes just confused me. Very new to crochet!

I also will add I found the wording a bit tricky. I thought I was supposed to repeat a 2dc/sc 2dc pattern so my first few attempts were a mess. Finally realized the 2dc is only at the first stitch and the rest is as sc 2dc! Sounds like a few others made similar mistakes.

Hello, thank you for the wonderful pattern. This is only my fourth crochet project, and the first where I'm not following a step by step YouTube video. So I must have misunderstood something: my scarf part has turned out way longer and skinnier than yours. I ended up with a four puffs by twenty-three puffs scarf, instead of five by sixteen as I think is shown in the picture. I'm now going to unravel the entire scarf and start over; careful reckoning has left me with the notion that I may need to start with a chain of 52 in order to end up with a scarf that is sixteen puffs long. I'm confused because otherwise the pattern is giving me no problems whatsoever, and the hood part worked out exactly as pictured. I'll let you know how it works out, if you wish. Kind regards, Irene

Love your pattern. I went to the website looking for how to adjust this pattern for 16 year old girl and for an adult woman. I would also love to make it for a 12-14 month old boy. Would you please, please provide the adjusted pattern directions for these sizes? I saw some dimensions, but am still unsure how to translate that. Would you also please clarify the pattern: The first stitch and then each other stitch for that row, ending with a single crochet on each row. I was looking on the comments and want to be sure of the directions for each row. It might be more clear for me- a beginner- if I saw it as
first stitch (no comma)
Second stitch is: and should be repeated almost to the end
Last stich of each row should be a single crochet.
Sorry to bother you about this- I wish I could make this for Christmas presents- since I have no money this year.
Thank you for your beautiful pattern. Any chance that you will do a you tube video tutorial for dummies like me? If you should do one in the future, please e-mail me to let me know. Best regards and Happy Holidays.
